Turning Roads Electric

As I have sifted through my old files, I have realized that Indiana Jones’ Dad was right. I can’t remember all the details and I should have: Written them down in my Diary so that I wouldn’t have to remember.

I did this project in 2013. One thing I do remember is I was inspired by several maps. The first time I saw a map that glowed was in Star Wars. I sure loved seeing the Death Star plans, and loved it even more when they came in as a hologram in Return of the Jedi. I saw it again in the Wrath of Khan. A cartography classmate, Colin Lundrigan, made a super cool glowing coastline in 2007 (it was one of the earlier real-world maps I had seen using a glowing edge). John Nelson also map a tornado one that I really liked (making the glowing part of the attraction). I had seen some spectacular shipping lane ones too. There was lots of inspiration for this one.

I wanted to do a twist on the visual. I had never seen a lightning technique applied to roads.

I liked it so much I applied it to ocean routes… Then to rivers. But I can’t find those files anywhere… They have to be somewhere, right?

Like the 3D choropleth, I was fortunate enough to make a HUGE wall map for the 2013 Esri User Conference.
